CYGNUS SYNTHETIC
Two in each hand and one in my mouth. My mom and aunt tell me stories about how I always carried five pacifiers everywhere when I was a baby. We laugh and smile, but it reminds me that from the moment we are born we are surrounded by plastic. Cygnus Synthetic arranges Nature, Humanity, and Plastic as a trinity to highlight this tragic- and deeply intimate- reality.
Discarded plastic degrades into tiny invisible pieces known as microplastics. These have been detected in every biome and water source on earth as well as inside plants, animals, and humans. Particulate plastics in our oceans alone outnumber the stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. They leech and transport toxic chemicals into nearly everything, and we have no way to control this invisible threat. Cygnus Synthetic explores particulate plastic’s infiltration into our lives, our bodies, and our environments through a contemporary re-telling of the famous (and prophetic) ballet solo “The Dying Swan”. An abstracted dialogue between particulate plastic and a creature murdered by the hands of an insidiously polluted environment.
